Directories of translators
Below are the best directories for finding a freelance translator. The links connect directly to search pages.
翻訳者ディレクトリ
This Japanese site contains a directory of translators working in many fields. Especially useful for finding Japanese <> English translators. Allows keyword searches.
Japan Association of Translators (JAT)
A directory mainly of Japanese <> English translators working in Japan. Allows search by specialty and location. Translators listed here are generally more professional.
American Translators Association (ATA)
Here one can search for translators working in any language pair and in a wide range of specializations. One can also search by keyword and by native language. Here too translators are more professional. “Translating Service(s)” allows one to search for translators, editors, proofreaders, localizers, etc. “Interpreting service(s)” allows one to search for simultaneous, consecutive, and telephone interpreters.
Proz.com
Again, one can search for translators working in any language pair and in a wide range of fields. One can search by keyword and by native language. Since proz.com is a translation website. For a fee, translators are listed more prominently.
Translators Café
The advanced search tab allows searches for translators working in any language pair, and one can limit the search to native speakers. One can also specify general or specific areas of specialization and can narrow the field even further with keywords. “Services” allows one to look for translators, editors, proofreaders, copywriters, technical writers, various types of interpreters, etc. Here too, paying translators are listed more prominently, but one can expand the list to include all translators listed points.
Society of Writers, Editors, and Translators (SWET)
This society is based in Japan. The member list can be searched to find English-language workers based mostly in Japan. The search tool, at the bottom, allows searching for areas of expertise. For multiple keywords, click “+” and select “Areas of Expertise.”
